" Wood taken from the tree has ' died '. Through the art of Sculpture
it is ' resurrected ' and relives in a more oblique sense..."

Steven Foxley is a sculptor who works mainly with wood. He is self-trained and started to experiment with
wood in 1994. Born in London, 1970, he now lives and works in France. He has exhibited in Ireland and
France aswell as participating in several Cyber exhibitions on the Internet.

The sculptures are almost entirely in wood, sometimes with added metallic elements ( clockwork, wiring, etc.).

Wood is an extremely polyvalent material. Each wood has its own characteristics, from the heavy density of ebony and other 'exotics' to the fine suppleness of lime and other fruitwoods. Therefore each type of wood contains its own idiosyncracies which 'play' an important role in the sculpture, from the conception through to the end result. Even after a piece is completed, the wood continues to work. It breathes and
eventually darkens and of course it will eventually rot. All of these aspects are reflected in the sculptures that I do. The very fact that life is transient, that everything has its end. The sculptures are attempts to externalize and rationalize this transience.

This use of wood also gives rise to the possibilities of sculptures that are somewhat organic, coming from a living object that, like all life has gone through the processes of birth, growth and decline. The sculpture becomes merely an extension of that process.

The central theme of the sculptures seems to be of an esoterical nature, for example, the use of characters from diverse mythologies ( Icarus, 7 Souls, the Horned God ). These archetypes clarify the structure of human existence. Used in sculpture, they reflect the potential modification of this structure.
And modifying this structure seems to be what we as humans do best...
